ActionAid Ghana Launches “Cycling for a Just Transition” Campaign Ahead of COP30
As the world prepares for the COP30 Climate Summit in Belém, Brazil, ActionAid Ghana is calling for urgent action on climate finance and justice through its youth-led campaign, “Cycling for a Just Transition: Pedal for a Safer Planet,” set to take place on November 6, 2025, in Tamale.
The campaign aims to amplify the voices of young people, women, and communities at the frontline of the climate crisis. It brings together members of Activista Ghana, the Young Urban Women’s Movement, Smallholder Women Farmers, and Ecovista representatives from the Northern Region to pedal for equity, climate justice, and a sustainable future.
The initiative follows the launch of ActionAid International’s latest report, “Climate Finance for a Just Transition: How the Finance Flows,” which reveals that less than 3% (2.8%) of global climate finance supports just transition approaches that prioritise workers, women, and communities.
“In Tamale, we're facing the harsh impacts of climate change daily. Unpredictable rains, long droughts, and the loss of fertile land are putting smallholder farmers, especially women who rely on rain-fed agriculture, at risk. This campaign is our chance to say enough is enough. We need climate finance that directly supports our communities, funds that help us adapt, invest in sustainable farming, and create cleaner, fairer livelihoods. A just transition must start with those most affected, not the corporations that caused the crisis”~ Madam Beatrice Biijie, Northern Regional Manager.
ActionAid Ghana’s campaign highlights this alarming gap and calls on world leaders and policymakers at COP30 to:
- Increase grant-based climate finance — not loans — to support communities in the Global South facing climate impacts.
- Phase out fossil fuels and harmful industrial agriculture, investing instead in renewable energy and agroecology.
- Adopt inclusive, participatory, and gender-responsive climate policies that protect livelihoods and advance social justice.
A People-Centred Approach to Climate Action
“Climate finance must serve the people, not profit. As we ride through Tamale, our message is simple: a Just Transition must put women, workers, and smallholder farmers at the heart of climate solutions. Without equity, there can be no sustainability.”- John Nkaw, Country Director of ActionAid Ghana. “
The “Cycling for a Just Transition” campaign forms part of ActionAid’s global mobilization toward COP30 under the #JustTransitionRising movement a collective call to ensure that the transition to a green economy is fair, inclusive, and transformative.
