Women's Participation in Politics

ActionAid Ghana (AAG) wholeheartedly commends Ghanaians for the overall peaceful conduct of the Presidential and Parliamentary elections, despite some isolated incidents of violence. The 2024 peaceful elections highlight our commitment to democracy and are commendable and deserve recognition.

We resolutely stand with like-minded stakeholders in celebrating Her Excellency Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman’s historic election as the first female Vice-President of Ghana. This achievement marks a defining moment in the Fourth Republic of Ghana, and we extend our strongest commendations upon her assumption of this pivotal role.

As a gender-focused organisation, AAG is proud to acknowledge this milestone, which boldly represents progress for women's representation across Ghana. This victory exemplifies our relentless pursuit of feminist-leadership principles and gender equality in society. We refer to your victory speech where you eloquently reiterated that "I'll hold the door open for others to walk through", a powerful affirmation of your willingness to work and support the feminist action cause.

At ActionAid Ghana, we firmly believe that your leadership will not only inspire but also empower women and girls, significantly enhancing their confidence to participate in governance to improve their dignity and advocate for quality of life. We are optimistic that you will prioritise the rights of Ghanaians especially that of women and girls in government policies and programmes. Achieving these high principles of democracy will add value to Ghana’s democratic credentials and promote social justice for all.

ActionAid Ghana would also like to use this opportunity to extend our heartfelt congratulations and well wishes to all newly elected female members of Parliament. Our sincere congratulations also go to the gallant female Parliamentary candidates who stood for the elections but couldn’t win.  We commend Ghanaians for their belief in and better appreciation of what women in leadership can do for the overall development of the country.
