ActionAid Ghana and Foto4Change Set to Host Photo Exhibition to Mark World Water Day on March 22 in Tamale.
As part of efforts to deepen climate justice advocacy and amplify community voices on water inequality, ActionAid Ghana (AAG) in partnership with Foto4Change is set to host a compelling photo exhibition at the Bilpiela Dam in Tamale to commemorate World Water Day 2026.
This year’s exhibition builds on the success of the 2025 edition, where both organisations collaborated on the “Water Scarcity and Climate Change” Street Photography Exhibition, spotlighting the intersection of climate change and water insecurity in the communities of Kpene and Dabogshei. Through a powerful blend of visual storytelling and community theatre, the initiative brought to life the lived realities of climate vulnerability, reaching over 456 participants and catalysing critical grassroots dialogue. A key outcome was a community-led tree planting initiative in Dabogshei, reinforcing local ownership of climate action and environmental stewardship.
In preparation for this year’s event, a joint delegation from Foto4Change and ActionAid Ghana, alongside Buta Visual Agency, paid a courtesy call on the Chief of Bilpiela to formally notify him of the upcoming exhibition. The team was warmly received by the Wulana, Abukari Nabila, who expressed strong interest in the initiative and pledged his full support. He further shared insights into the history of the Bilpiela Dam, underscoring its critical role as a primary water source for the community despite growing challenges linked to climate variability and access.
Extending their stakeholder engagements, the team visited the Bilpiela Anglican School, where discussions were held with the headteacher on involving young girls in the exhibition. This engagement seeks to create a platform for girls to share their lived experiences, particularly how water scarcity and the burden of water collection continue to disrupt their education and limit their opportunities. The headteacher welcomed the initiative and expressed readiness to support, subject to further consultations.
The delegation also engaged the Bilpiela Health Facility, where the officer in charge responded positively to a request for a health professional to participate in the exhibition. The health expert is expected to provide critical insights into the health implications of consuming untreated water from the dam, further strengthening the advocacy message around safe and equitable water access.
These strategic engagements underscore ActionAid Ghana’s commitment to community-led advocacy, multi-stakeholder collaboration, and gender-responsive climate action. The World Water Day 2026 Photo Exhibition, scheduled for 22nd March at the Bilpiela Dam, will serve as a powerful platform to connect lived experiences with policy dialogue, while advancing the call for gender-just and sustainable water solutions.
