Unpaid care work is critical to social reproduction which is how societies reproduce themselves, nurture and prepare the labour force as a critical input for economic development. Although it is a critical social investment that contributes to human capital development, it is not sufficiently emphasised like other aspects of human capital development such as education and health. It is generally unrecognised and under-valued by policymakers and legislators and not factored into the computation of national accounts.
